 Old Chair

Turn Chair over and remove the seat cushion with a screwdriver

Start painting the chair.  Apply several light coats of paint rather than one heavy coat.

Lay a square of fabric larger than the seat cushion out on the floor.  Lay the cushion upside down in the middle of the fabric then pull the edges up and staple.

1.  Choose a wooden chair for this project.  Give the chair back and legs a thorough wipe down with soapy water to remove any oil or dirt.  If there is a glossy finish on the chair you will need to give the wood a light sanding with fine grit sandpaper (120 or 150 grit).  Be sure to remover the seat of the chair first.  To do this, flip the chair over and use a screw driver to unscrew the seat from the bottom.

2.  Apply a white bonding primer like Preprite Problock Latex Sealer by Sherwin Williams or a similar product with a paint brush.  Apply primer just like you would paint.  Use the primer in a well ventilated area and allow proper drying time indicated on the primer label.  If you are going to use a dark paint color, you can have your primer tinted.  Using a tinted primer will reduce the need for multiple coats of paint.  Ask an employee where you purchase the primer to do this. (This step is optional.)

3.  Choose a spray paint color that works with your existing décor.  Spray the chair with a light coat of paint, continue to spray the chair until the entire chair has an even color.  Allow the paint to dry.

4.  Choose a fabric for the seat of the chair.  Lay the fabric out on the floor or a table and sit the chair seat upside down on top of the fabric.  Cut the fabric around the seat leaving at least 2 inches of extra fabric for the edges.  Make sure the seat cushion is centered on the fabric the pull the fabric up to the back of the seat cushion and staple.  Staple the fabric every inch or so all the way around the bottom of the seat cushion.

5.  Once the chair is dry, place the seat cushion back on and refasten.
