Get to know your style

Decorating a room sometimes can be a daunting task.  There are so many different styles and looks to choose from.  Whether you like Traditional, Modern, Mediterranean, Country, Victorian, Asian, Eclectic and the list goes on and on, or you don't have a clue what your personal taste is, a good place to start is looking at decorating pictures.

There is a wide variety of interior decorating magazines, and websites to search through, to help give you a better idea of how you would like your home to look and understand what your taste really is.

Start compiling a collection of pictures that catch your attention as you are  searching.  Once you have several pictures set aside, look back through them to see what the common thread is.  Do all the color schemes in the rooms seem to be the same?  Is the design of the furniture the same? Or, do you have a collection of all different looks and color schemes?  No matter what your collection is complied of, now you have a good jumping off point to start on your home decorating makeover.

If you are going to be working with a professional Interior Designer or Decorator, it is helpful to give your collection of pictures to them.  This helps ensure that the professional you are working with now has a good idea of what you are looking for, and can narrow down your personal taste making their task much easier and you a happy camper when the room is done.Outdoor Porch

For those of you "Do it Yourself" types out there, use your pictures to start with the basics.  What is the common paint color on the walls of all your pictures?   Take your pictures with you to the paint store as a reference when you are looking through the paint color options.  Do the same when going to the furniture stores.  Continue using your pictures as reference as you choose the other aspects of your room such as flooring curtains, lighting, and accessories.  It is always best to just use your pictures as a reference and not try to match them exactly; this ensures that you will create an original room that you love and not just a carbon copy of another.

Now have fun and get decorating!
